Reviews & Scores
The '89 is one of the richest and most delicious vintages ever produced from Clos du Mesnil. Purists may say that the wine is a little over ripe, but I love its almond depth and super long length. This, to me, embodies pure hedonistic pleasure.

Not surprisingly this is markedly more youthful than the same wine in 750 ml format but as it should it shares many of the same characteristics that include the brioche, baked apple and prominent yeast elements, but the marmalade character is at this point only a whisper. There is also a better sense of vibrancy to the wonderfully complex flavors where the supporting mousse remains firm and fine, all wrapped in an utterly delicious and, again like the 750 ml version, saliva-inducing finale. While I don't believe there is any reason to continue to cellar this beauty in terms of potential development, neither is there any need to drink up sooner than later. Lovely juice that should continue to hold well in magnum format.

I have never been a great fan of the style of the warm vintage of 1989 in Champagne, as I have always held a preference for the two bookend vintages of 1988 and 1990 over the slightly more obvious wines of 1989. But the 1989 Krug Vintage is a superb example of the vintage and the wine has evolved beautifully since its release more than a decade ago and is now drinking very well indeed. The nose is deep, vibrant and quite tertiary in its aromatic blend of baked apples and pears, brioche, nutty overtones, a gentle base of soil and a topnote of rye. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very suave on the attack, with very good mid-palate depth, lovely framing acids, fairly gentle mousse and lovely length and grip on the à point finish. A lovely drink for the next couple of decades.

Krug’s 1989 Vintage, tasted from magnum, was explosive, ripe and beautifully layered from start to finish.

This is a classic food Champagne, hugely rich, toasty, generous. Yes, there is acidity and minerality, but these individual factors are less important than the overall opulence of this intense wine. It is still amazingly young, fresh and vibrant, but also so powerful.

Rich, lush aromas of dried fruit and citrus marmalade, this is Champagne at its most opulent. Honeyed and round on the palate, with fine acidity keeping it focused. Gorgeous now, yet will age well.

Vinous, minerally nose dominated by toffee and apple. Mouthfilling, quite dry and very intensely flavored, with penetrating yet harmonious acidity. Offers the exotic fruit quality of the vintage but has the minerally, steely spine to handle the very ripe flavors. Very long and firm. Impressively fine for the year. Krug released this wine before the '88.
